Full-Grain vs Genuine vs Split Leather: What Men's Labels Mean (2026)
Share
Four words do almost all the work on a leather label, and only one of them means the top of the hide.
Last updated: October 2026
Full-grain is the outermost layer of the hide and the only grade that builds a patina, and at Adam & Westcott it starts at $39.99 on the
Marenzo Brass Leather Belt. Below it sit first-layer cowhide, split leather and PU, and the word "genuine" fits three of those four tiers, which is why it tells you so little alone.

What does "genuine leather" actually mean?
"Genuine leather" promises only that the material came from a hide, not which layer. A hide splits horizontally: the top surface is full-grain, the cut beneath is sold as first-layer, and the fibrous layer underneath becomes split leather. All three are leather, but only the first keeps the tight grain that resists stretching and darkens with wear. That is why Adam & Westcott copy states the layer rather than stopping at "genuine". The
Marenzo Brass Leather Belt lists both: 100% genuine cowhide and a thick full-grain build, 1.5 inch width, 34 to 44 inch length range.
Full-grain, first-layer, split or PU: how the four compare
Four labels, four different materials, lowest grade of construction at the bottom.
| Label | What it is | How it ages | A&W pick |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full-grain | Top hide layer, grain left intact | Patinas, resists stretching |
|
| First-layer cowhide | Top cut, surface often finished | Softer, slower patina |
|
| Split leather | Lower hide layer, no top grain | Holds shape, no patina |
|
| PU or vegan | Coated synthetic, no hide | Uniform, can crack in time |

Is full-grain leather worth paying more for?
The full-grain premium on an Adam & Westcott belt is roughly $10: it opens at $39.99 and the range tops out at $79.98. On a piece you buckle every morning, that is a cheap upgrade.
Thick full-grain cowhide, solid brass pin buckle, 1.5 inch width, five sizes from 34 to 36 up to 42 to 44.
Genuine full-grain cowhide, 20 to 35 L, fits a 15.6 inch laptop, 43 x 34 x 17 cm, 1.6 kg.
Is split leather real leather, and is PU the same as vegan?
Split leather is real leather, taken from the hide below the top grain, which is why the
Heritage Stitch Leather Loafers at $59.99 say "genuine split-leather upper". It takes a finish well and holds a shoe's shape, but will not darken the way a full-grain belt does.
PU and vegan leather are one category under two names: a polyurethane coating on fabric, with no hide in it. The
Leather Leaf Pendant Tri-Fold Wallet at $43.99 is the honest example, lighter and more uniform in colour than any hide.
Which Adam & Westcott pieces publish a full-grain spec?
Each states full-grain or first-layer cowhide in its own copy, with the measurement it publishes.

How do you check the grade yourself?
Read the spec line, not the marketing line. A full-grain piece says so; one that only says "genuine leather" is usually a lower layer. Full-grain carries small natural marks, so a surface with no variation is a finish, not a grain.

Leather grades: frequently asked questions
Is full-grain better than genuine leather?
Yes. Full-grain names the top layer of the hide, while "genuine leather" names no layer at all. Full-grain starts at $39.99 at Adam & Westcott.
Is split leather real leather?
Yes. Split leather is the lower fibrous layer of a real hide, cut away below the top grain. It holds shape well but develops no patina.
Does PU leather last as long as cowhide?
No. PU is a coating on fabric with no grain to wear in, and it can crack with age where full-grain cowhide darkens instead.
What leather width should a belt be?
3.3 cm to 3.8 cm covers most outfits. The Roma Rustico Leather Belt is 3.3 cm, the Kingsbay Automatic Belt 3.5 cm and the Copper-Crest Genuine Leather Belt 3.8 cm.
What is first-layer cowhide?
First-layer cowhide is the top cut of the hide, the same layer as full-grain, usually lightly finished. The Classic Cowhide Belt at $54.99 is one example.
