Three Adam & Westcott men's sweaters laid flat: a navy cable panel knit, a brown elbow patch pullover and a khaki heavy rib sweater

What Size Sweater Should I Buy? The Adam & Westcott Size Run (2026)

Same letter as your shirt, until you start layering. Here is what every size in the Adam & Westcott knitwear range covers, and where the run stops.

Last updated: September 2026

Buy the same letter size you wear in an Adam & Westcott shirt. Every one of the 18 sweaters in the current range carries M, L and XL, 15 of the 18 carry 2XL, and only 7 reach 3XL, so the size you want is almost always in stock up to 2XL and gets scarce above it. Size up one letter only if the sweater will sit over a collared shirt.

In this guide:

  • What each letter measures in inches
  • When to size up for layering
  • Which sweaters run past 2XL
  • What to do if you need XS or sit between sizes

What size sweater should I buy?

No sweater in the range publishes its own chest chart, so the letter run is the answer, and Adam & Westcott's charts elsewhere in the catalog tell you what those letters mean. On the Cotton Solid Long Sleeve ShirtCotton Solid Long Sleeve Shirt, size L measures 42.5 inches in the chest and each step adds about 1.6 inches. The column that matters most is the one on the right: the share of the 18 active sweaters that actually offer each size.

Size Chest, slim cut Chest, relaxed cut Best for Offered on
XS 37.8 in 43.3 in Slim frames, worn close 6 of 18
S 39.4 in 44.9 in Over a tee only 17 of 18
M 40.9 in 46.5 in The default pick 18 of 18
L 42.5 in 48.0 in Over a collared shirt 18 of 18
XL 44.1 in 49.6 in Layering room, relaxed drape 18 of 18
2XL 45.7 in 51.2 in Broad chest, full coverage 15 of 18
3XL and up Not charted 52.8 in at 3XL Order early, thin availability 7 of 18

Inch figures are Adam & Westcott's own published charts: the slim column from the Cotton Solid Long Sleeve ShirtCotton Solid Long Sleeve Shirt, the relaxed column from the Stand Collar Bomber JacketStand Collar Bomber Jacket. Knitwear sits between the two.

Should I size up in a sweater for layering?

Only over a collared shirt. One letter step adds about 1.6 inches of chest, and a buttoned shirt under a sweater needs roughly 1 to 2 inches of that, so a single step up covers it. Over a plain tee, stay at your usual letter.

Cut matters as much as the letter. A slim knit at L gives you 42.5 inches, a relaxed layer at the same L gives 48.0 inches. That 5.5 inch gap inside one letter is why the same size feels tailored in one piece and roomy in another.

Which Adam & Westcott sweaters go above 2XL?

Seven of the 18 reach 3XL, two reach 4XL, and one reaches 5XL. If you wear 3XL or larger the choice narrows sharply, so start here:
